Operating principle

Working principle

Functioning of the device is based on the principle of generating an ionizing sound shock wave, which traveling towards the upper layers of the atmosphere causes the effect of turbulence, which are aimed at preventing and hindering the formation of initial ice nuclei and, if they have already formed, causing them to move through warmer cloud layers for melting.

Directed emission of high-energy ionizing mechanical waves causes polarity mixing within the hail cloud, resulting in initial hail cores no longer being able to accumulate water droplets and frozen water vapor.

Ionizing sound waves are obtained by burning a mixture of acetylene and air in a special chamber, they are emitted every 5 to 10 seconds and by their impact on the front of the incoming storm cloud (cumulonimbus) cause instability of the initial cores of frozen water in order to break them up and melt.

The instability of the crystallization nuclei is caused by the simultaneous effect of air pressure changes, high-pitched directional sound and the thermal effect of high-speed heated gases that are "sucked" by the cumulonimbus due to the appearance of a strong vertical buoyancy of warm air from the ground layer of the atmosphere, characteristic of the process of formation of hail clouds (most often cumulonimbus).

Functioning of the system

Functioning of the system is based on the principle of generating an ionizing sound shock wave that, traveling to the upper layers of the atmosphere, causes the effect of turbulence, which are aimed at preventing and disrupting the formation of initial ice nuclei and, if they have already formed, causing them to move through warmer cloud layers for melting. Anti-hail Cannon can protect from hailan area of size up to 1 km2, which corresponds to the area of approximately 80 hectares (circle with a radius of 500 meters).

The propagation speed of the waves generated by the system is equal to the speed of sound (≈ 330 m/s).

In order to achieve continuous operation, the system successively emits sound waves at intervals of 5-10 seconds, that is, a maximum of 6 to 10 cycles per minute.

The full effectiveness of the system in preventing the occurrence of hail is achieved by its timely activation before the arrival of a storm or hail cloud above the zone protected by the device. This means that it is necessary to activate the system immediately before the appearance of a potentially hail-bearing cloud, i.e. immediately after it is determined on the radar image that there is a potential danger of the appearance of hail.
The optimal period for early activation of the device is between 20 and 30 minutes.

Due to the funnel shape of the tube through which it travels, the volume of the shock wave increases proportionally as the height it reaches increases. Noise emission

The noise of the explosion is directed and amplified by means of a funnel along which a shock wave is formed, which is heard as a crack with a volume of about 90 dB at a distance of 50 m. Because there is no electromagnetic radiation at any time during system operation, the aircraft's electronic devices which fly over the area of effect of the anti-hail cannon therefore cannot be hindered in any way.

The impact sound wave produced by the anti-hail cannon is comparable to the sound wave from a weak thunderbolt and is therefore not strong enough to endanger air traffic or the living world in the vicinity.
